A late spring day on the summit of Cairngorm .

The Cairngorm Mountains

The central massive of the Cairngorms dominate the area. This ancient mountain range has been cut by ice and snow over millions of years to its present form. The high tops are a plateau dissected by valley’s and passes.

Containing many of the highest peaks in the U.K. they provide challenging walking and climbing. If you wish to venture into these hills please ensure you are properly equipped for all the weather can throw at you and have the necessary experience to deal with it. There are reports available on weather conditions throughout the year.

When conditions are good, the experience is wonderful, and the views spectacular. When they are bad, the best place to be is somewhere else.

However, you can experience the view from the top of Cairngorm in safety by taking the funicular railway to within 150 metres of the summit. Choose a day when high pressure has just started and haze has not had time to obscure the view. We have seen the Cullin Ridge on Skye, 100 miles distant! The view is breath-taking.
